‘Movements!’

A product of the study of the communication of movement via different media. This hand woodworked piece was inspired by Bridget Riley's 'Movement in Squares' (1961). Her powerful use of contrast and patterns through her paintings struck me with such beauty, l wondered how patterns like hers would look if translated to a different 'more grounding' medium, like woodworking.

I traveled to a lumberyard where I found salvageable pieces of lumber byproduct for wood art projects. I fell in love with this light toned Ghost Maple wood that has natural streaks of pink running throughout. The Dark Oak was the perfect contrast to communicate the undulating checkerboard pattern I hold so closely to my heart.

Over 30 hours of work was put in using machinery like a band saw, scroll saw, industrial sanders, as well as hours of sanding by hand.

This piece was on display at A.P.E. Art Gallery in Northampton, MA in May-June 2022!
